Our junior Match of the Round sees a top of the table clash between Coomera and Nerang in the under 12s.

With both sides sitting on 17 competitions points after 4 matches, only a miserly for-and-against differential of 10 points splits the two sides.

We checked in with Coomera coach Clint Marama to see how his young chargers are preparing for their Match of the Round.

GCDRU: Congratulations on your start to the season. This is a top-of-the-table clash against Nerang - how are you preparing the boys for such a big match?

Clint: We’ve been focusing on staying connected as a team and sticking to the basics that have brought us success so far. The boys are excited and can’t wait.

They love playing against the best teams We treat every week as a chance to get better, and this one’s no different.

GCDRU: What makes this Coomera U12s team special, and what have you been most impressed with so far this season?

Clint: These boys genuinely love being around each other. They turn up to training 30 minutes early just to do extras and spend time together. Even on rainy days or bye weeks, we’re either training or finding ways to stay connected.

That commitment, energy, and bond as a group is what makes this team so special.

GCDRU: How do you keep the boys focused and enjoying their rugby when there's extra pressure in a match like this?

Clint: The boys love big games, they don’t shy away from it, they embrace it.

We focus on effort, teamwork, and having fun, because that’s when they play their best footy. Keeping the environment positive and tight-knit helps them rise to the occasion.

GCDRU: How have you seen the team develop and improve since the start of the year?

This year has been about rebuilding and laying new foundations. We’ve welcomed new players who’ve come so far in such a short time, and you can really see the tight bonds forming.

The team’s growing into something special, and we’re building the right culture as we get ready to represent Coomera and the Gold Coast in New Zealand at the Global games.

GCDRU: Which one or two players hold the key for you this weekend?

It’s always a team effort, but guys like Reef have really lifted this year with his rugby IQ and physicality.

Shaan’s been an X factor since moving from the forwards into the backs, especially with ball in hand, he can break a game open in a moment.

Both boys set a great example with their work ethic and attitude.

Coomera host Nerang this Saturday morning. Kick off at 10:20am. Good luck to both teams.
