The Gold Coast District Rugby Union (GCDRU) is proud to announce a new era for rugby on the Gold Coast.

Following a strategic review undertaken with Rugby Australia, broad consultation with our stakeholders (including our local clubs and Referee’s association), and a collaborative approach with our rugby community in general, GCDRU will introduce a Sunday competition structure for all Junior Rugby Union from 2026.

“One Game” “One Day” “One Stronger Community."

This decision reflects the vision and commitment of GCDRU’s leadership team to foster growth, unity, and opportunity across all levels of the game. By aligning our competitions on a single day, we are creating a clearer pathway for players, streamlining volunteer resources, and strengthening the bonds within our rugby community.

With the global rugby calendar presenting unprecedented opportunities, the timing of this change positions the Gold Coast at the forefront of the sport’s future:

  • 2027 – Australia hosts the Men’s Rugby World Cup
  • 2029 – Australia hosts the Women’s Rugby World Cup
  • 2032 – Rugby Sevens features at the Brisbane Olympic Games

The Gold Coast rugby community will be part of this journey, ensuring our players, coaches, volunteers, and clubs thrive as we look ahead to a decade of extraordinary rugby milestones.

“This is about more than scheduling — it is about building a stronger foundation for rugby’s future. Together, we are creating the environment for our game to grow and succeed,” said GCDRU Rugby Operations Manager, Kristin Dunn.

Together, we grow.

Kind Regards,

Jed Hogan (GCDRU Chairman) & Chris Cameron (GCDRU Vice Chairman)
